A Message from John Fleming,
CEO, Black Educational Events, LLC

John FlemingI’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for visiting our web site. Our goal is to help you experience the rich traditions and educational opportunities offered by our nation's 104 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

Let me share just a bit of the history of these incredible institutions. Our HBCUs have served the social, cultural, and educational needs of America's African-American men and women for the last 172 years, from the day Cheyney University opened its doors in 1837 to the present, as thousands of students from all ethnic backgrounds benefit from the academic excellence offered.

HBCUs have played a significant role in the education and development of youth in the United States. Each year, they award more than 50 percent of all undergraduate degrees and more than 60 percent of all the medical degrees awarded to African Americans. Simply put, these schools are as relevant today as ever before.

At BEE, we are committed to bringing greater awareness of HBCUs to the youth of America. As dropout rates among our young men and women continue to climb, it is critical that we help spread the message that these great institutions are still a viable choice for today...and the future.

Enjoy our web site. We hope that it provides you with the information that you need to research the opportunities available at our HBCUs.

MISSION STATEMENT

The primary goals of BEE are to:

  • Enhance the awareness of the cultural and educational opportunities offered at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), particularly among youth in western geographies.
  • Inspire minority youth, in particular, to embrace the seriousness of continuing education.
  • Celebrate the rich cultural and social heritage of African-Americans through educational programs, events, and books.

BEE PUBLISHING

BEE publishes HBCU Today, the premier resource guide to our nation's 104 Historically Black Colleges and universities.

BEE also publishes works celebrating African-American culture and individual achievement.

BEE EVENTS

BEE's core event offering, the Angel City Classic, is produced and held in Los Angeles every September. This event includes a football game between two Historically Black Colleges and Universities as well as the battle of the bands, performances by dance teams and cheering squads, career and cultural expos, and fifth-quarter concert.

The Angel City Classic Scholarship Gala, conducted a few days before the Angel City Classic, highlights the importance of education. Youth are the focus of the gala, from the entertainment to the awarding of scholarships. The event is also a showcase of celebrities, corporate leaders, community leaders, elected officials, and the presidents and staff of the participating HBCUs.

The Angel City Classic “King & Queen Competition” engages high school students throughout the southern California community in a competition that requires engagement in an after-school study program, community service, and the submission of an essay that describes the student's vision for his or her future.
