FOUNDING DATES OF HBCUs
Since 1837, when Cheyney University of Pennsylvania opened its doors, HBCUs have contributed to the rise of black profeessionals, buusiness leaders, teachers, nurses, artists, and engineers. While comprising only 3 percent of the nation's approximately 3,700 institutions of higher learning, these academic institutions are responsible for producing more than 50 percent of African-American professionals. Graduates include such leaders, artists, athletes, and entertainers as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Thurgood Marshall, Jerry Rice, Oprah Winfrey, Toni Morrison, Spike Lee, and Samuel L. Jackson.
